10 Ways to Stay Bug Free at the Lake

As the weather warms up and you begin to spend more time outside by the lake - bugs do too! Living on the lake has several pros, and just about the only con is those pesky bugs and insects you can't seem to get rid of. Here are some ways you can try to get rid of them.

1. Install a Fan

A fan is a great way to keep those bugs away. When those bugs try to get close, the fan will blow them away. The best part - a breeze to cool you down on those hot summer days!

2. Citronella Candles

Citronella candles are not a bug's best friend. Having a few of these candles around the area you are hanging out at will keep those bugs away.

3. Standing Water

Of course, being on a lake is being by a ton of standing water. If you have other standing water, like in the yard or driveway, you will want to pump it out or try to find a way to control it.

4. Grow Certain Plants

Some bright colored plants/flowers bring the bees and butterflies around. These bees and butterflies tend to keep the area free of other bugs. Some helpful plants are things like rosemary and mint!

5. Dryer Sheets

Who knew dryer sheets have more than just one use! Attaching a dryer sheet to yourself or to the area you are in will keep those bugs off of you.

6. Replace Light Bulbs

Bugs are especially attracted to white light bulbs. Instead, try yellow bulbs as they tend to not attract as many bugs.

7. Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract is another thing that has more than one use. Mix vanilla extract with an equal amount of water and apply it to your skin. It's kind of like bug spray - it just smells much better.

8. Mouthwash

Applying mouthwash to your deck area, or wherever you may be keeps the bugs away. They do not like the fresh smell like we do!

9. Bug Zapper

Invest in an easy bug zapper - these contraptions are an easy way to keep the bugs out of your area. Just install it, and let the bug zapper do the rest.

10. Essential Oils

There are several different kinds of essential oils that keep the bugs away. A few examples of scents you can use are mint, lemongrass, lavender, and tea-tree.
