Lake Safety Tips

Summer time is right around the corner, which means it's time to get on the lake. When spending time on the lake, it is good to know all things safety. Keep yourself, your friends, and family safe on the lake this year!

  • Life Jackets

Wearing a life jacket on the lake is a must, especially for the young ones. No matter how strong of a swimmer you are, wearing a life jacket is never a bad idea. Also, be sure that there is a life jacket for every single person on board the boat, whether they are wearing it or not.

  • Hydration & Sunscreen

When it is hot outside you need to make sure you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. Dehydration can make you dizzy and can even lead to loss of consciousness. While staying hydrated is important, so is protecting yourself from the sun. Keep up on the sunscreen and even consider wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself even further.

  • Weather

No matter if you are swimming off the dock or going on the boat always pay attention to the weather. Be sure to check the forecast for thunderstorms, as those are not a good mix with a big body of water. If you see lightning or hear the thunder, stay inside and most importantly stay off the water.

  • Water Sports Signals

When you go tubing, skiing, or wakeboarding it is important that you and the captain know the hand signals. These hand signals let the captain know different things like: slower, faster, and stop.

  • Watercraft Lights

Knowing which lights to use on your watercraft is important to keeping you and others safe. Typically you use a red and green sidelight that can be seen from far away. Most boats also use a white back light on the stern of the boat. Your docking lights are not to be used while going on a night time cruise. Each watercraft is different, which means the light requirements may be different as well. Either way, you must know and follow the lighting rules from dawn til’ dusk.

  • Never Go Alone

No matter where you go on the lake it is important to not go alone. Keeping someone with you at all times keeps you safe in case something were to happen.

  • Boating Safety Course

Stay up to date on your boater's safety and make sure everyone in the family does too. These courses make sure everyone is well educated to stay safe on the water.
