Tips for traveling with your boat this summer

Summer is finally here, and that means lake weekends, family vacations, and making the most of every opportunity on the water. Whether you're taking your boat a few lakes over or traveling across state lines, a little preparation can go a long way. Before you load up and hit the road, keep these travel tips in mind.

Inspect your trailer

Before leaving on your journey, conduct a thorough inspection of your trailer. Look for any signs of wear and tear, including:

  • Tires: Check for proper inflation and tread depth

  • Brakes: Ensure they are functioning correctly

  • Lights: Test all lights,

including brake lights, turn signals, and hazards

  • Frame: Inspect for any concerning cracks or rust

Secure Everything Before Taking Off

Make sure all items on your trailer are securely fastened. This includes:

  • Boat: Ensure the boat is properly secured to the trailer

  • Gear: All equipment should be stowed safely and tightly

  • Loose Items: Remove or secure any loose items that could shift during transport

Double-check your hitch

One of the most important safety steps is confirming your tow setup is correct.

Before leaving:

  • Verify your hitch is fully latched

  • Cross your safety chains

  • Plug in trailer wiring

  • Check your breakaway cable

  • Confirm your tow vehicle is rated for your boat’s total weight

When in doubt, take a few extra minutes—it’s worth it.

know your route

Before you leave:

  • Check for construction zones

  • Plan fuel and rest stops

  • Avoid roads with low clearances or tight turns

  • Allow extra travel time for launching and loading

Navigation apps don’t always account for trailers, so review your route ahead of time.

pack for the unexpected

Keep a small travel kit on hand with essentials like:

  • Spare trailer tire

  • Jack and lug wrench

  • Wheel chocks

  • Basic tools

  • Flashlight

  • Extra tie-down straps

  • First aid kit

Protect your boat at every stop

Whenever you stop, take precautions to protect your boat:

  • Park in well-lit areas

  • Remove valuables from sight

  • Secure the trailer and boat with locks

  • Inspect the boat and trailer for any signs of damage before taking off again

Do one final walk around before heading out on the water

Once you arrive:

  • Remove tie-down straps

  • Install drain plugs

  • Disconnect transom straps

  • Check battery power

  • Inspect the area around the launch

A quick final check helps you spend more time on the water and less time troubleshooting at the ramp.

Keep these steps in mind next time you travel to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while transporting your boat.
