The winter season is right around the corner, which makes now the perfect time to start planning for storage. Whether it’s water toys, dock accessories, or canopy covers, properly storing your boating equipment during the winter months is the best way to protect your investment and ensure many more seasons of lake life. Why should you remove your boat lift canopy during the winter months? We're here to tell you why it is pretty important!

Windstorms

Here in Nebraska, winter often brings high-wind storms that can cause serious damage to your lift if the canopy is left on without a boat underneath it. During strong windstorms, serious damage can occur and can:

  • Take your entire lift out of the water, as your canopy can act like a kite.

  • In a very strong windstorm, the wind can blow your lift completely across the lake, which can cause serious damage to your lift, your property, and your neighbors' properties.

Snow

Aside from windstorms, he snow in the Midwest is another major concern regarding your canopy and can lead to:

  • Structural damage: The weight of snow can bend, warp, or even collapse the frame of your boat lift, which would end up costing you a lot of money to repair come spring.

  • Wear and tear: As the snow and ice sit on top of your canopy, it could eventually create holes and rips, which again would not be cheap to replace.

Moisture Buildup

Leaving your canopy on over the winter also traps moisture on the canopy for extended periods of time. Trapped moisture on your canopy can create mold and mildew, which can lead to your canopy breaking down faster and not lasting as long as it should.

To protect your investment, we strongly recommend removing your canopy cover for the winter months to protect both your lift and canopy from unnecessary damage!
